GTA 3G Decommissioning Information

Why is 3G being decommissioned?

3G is an older technology compared to modern LTE and 5G networks. Shutting down the 3G network allows us to reallocate resources to LTE and 5G, enhancing network capacity, speed, and overall performance. 

What's affected?

The following devices and systems may be impacted:

• Cellular devices that are not VoLTE capable
• Certain hotspots, tablets, and smartwatches
• IoT devices that rely solely on 3G modems and Modules
• Medical alert systems, vehicle tracking (GPS) devices, and security systems that operate on 3G
• *488# for GTA prepaid users

How will it affect customers?

Once the 3G network is decommissioned:

• Devices that only support 3G will no longer be able to make or receive voice calls, send text messages, use mobile data, or access emergency services (911)
• Phones that support LTE but not VoLTE will be unable to make or receive voice calls
• If your phone supports VoLTE, it must be enabled to avoid service disruption
• *488# for GTA prepaid users will no longer be available. This is due to the interface being supported by 3G.

How to enable VoLTE or find out if your phone is VoLTE capable?

Instructions below show how to enable VoLTE on your phone. It is to note that many newer devices have VoLTE enabled by default and do not offer a manual toggle. VoLTE settings may also vary by device and software version. We also recommend that you restart your device once all instructions are completed.

For Samsung Devices (Galaxy S6 or later):

1. Go to Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks
2. Click on the toggle for VoLTE calls on your SIM

For iPhones (iPhone 6 or later):

1. Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Voice & Data
2. Tap the toggle on VoLTE to enable 

NOTE: If you have more than 1 SIM on your iPhone the first step would be Settings → Cellular → Tap on your phone number → Voice & Data then proceed to turn on VoLTE.

For Google Pixels (Pixel 3 or later):

1. Go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Tap on your phone number

2. Tap the toggle on VoLTE to enable

Quick Test: 

Make a call while connected to LTE or 5G. If your phone remains on LTE during the call, VoLTE is working. If it switches to 3G, VoLTE may be unsupported or not enabled.
