Tamuning (Guam), Thursday, May 7, 2015 – GTA announced today the expansion of its high speed fiber optic network with the introduction of Fiber to the Neighborhood now available to residents and businesses. The fiber rollout allows GTA to deliver speeds of up to 50 Mbps which is five times faster than the average internet speed subscribed to in Guam households.
Consumers can look forward to faster upload and download speeds, improved latency, and the ability to stream their favorite movies and television shows without buffering. The enhancement to the network also gives our digital TV subscribers access to more High Definition (HD) streams. By midyear, subscribers will be able to view over 100 channels in HD, compared to the 80 that are available now.
Work is completed on Phase 1 to bring Fiber to the Neighborhood to a total of 12,000 homes. In the Phase 2 another 18,000 homes will be covered, bringing the total number of households to 30,000 by the end of the year. Approximately 3,000 homes per month will be added during this phase. In Phase 3, GTA will cover an additional 10,000 homes bringing the total number of households to 40,000 by the end of 2016. Robert Haulbrook, GTA president and chief executive officer, says, "As bandwidth demands continue to rise, bringing Fiber to the Neighborhood allows consumers to enjoy faster Internet speeds and increased reliability. Making enhancements to our fiber optic network allows us to deliver the bandwidth customers need to stream HD videos and music, upload photos, and play video games with improved performance. With speeds of up to 50 Mbps, consumers can stream on multiple devices with a more consistent internet experience."
The Fiber to the Neighborhood enhancement schedule includes:
- Northern Villages (Yigo and Dededo) August 2015
- Dededo to Agana: November 2015
- Central Villages: March 2016
- Pago Pay to Talofofo: June 2016
- Cross Island, Agat, Santa Rita: October 2016
GTA is investing over $20 million in enhancements and upgrades to the overall network for 2015. To ensure all projects are completed on schedule, the company is working closely with village mayors and the Department of Public Works to complete required permits for one of GTA's largest projects since first becoming privatized in 2005.
Haulbrook says, "This is a significant undertaking for GTA. Our initiatives continue with an ongoing commitment to Guam's economic development as we have added over a hundred new jobs to keep Guam up to speed with the latest technology."
To introduce the new tiered offering of 50 Mbps, GTA has launched a special promotional price of $65 per month for 12 months when bundled with our Digital TV. Terms and conditions apply.
