- Why is GTA moving to metered data versus unlimited data?
-
Similar to Wireless Carriers in the U.S., we are taking steps to better manage our exploding demand for wireless data. Many telecom experts agree that carriers nationwide are facing a serious wireless spectrum crunch. With this in mind, we are responding on many levels. This includes our continued investment of millions of dollars in our wireless network working to acquire additional network capacity. We are also taking immediate measures to help address network congestion.
One measure is managing those who use an extraordinary amount of data usage that puts them in the top five percent of our heaviest data users in a given month. To put it into better perspective 94% of all our active wireless data subscribers fall below 5GB of usage each month. There is however a small percentage of about 5% that use more than 40% of our total network capacity. This has caused data congestion on many of our sites. GTA is moving toward metered data as a means to reduce this congestion. - How will I be billed for data now?
- If you are on a metered data plan you will be given a bucket of data, if the bucket is exceeded you will be charged a small overage fee per kilobyte.
- Will my data bucket apply when I roam?
- No it will not. When you leave Guam, roaming is charged per Kilobyte based on the location and carrier you are roaming with.
- What if I'm on a 5GB data plan and I realize I need 10GB. When I upgrade will I be required to renew my 2 year contract term?
- If you purchased your device at a discounted price and were required to sign a 2 year contract term on voice and data, you will be required to renew your contract.
- What if I need more data usage allowance each month?
- If you need additional data each month, you can visit one of Retail Stores or contact us at 644-4482 and we can assist you in determining what plan works best for you based on your usage.
- What is a Gigabyte?
- A Gigabyte (abbreviated GB) is a unit of measurement for data. One (1) GB is equal to 1024 Megabytes (MB) and one (1) Megabyte (MB) is equal to 1024 Kilobytes (KB).
With the rate plan changes GTA will also rollout an automated feature that allows customers to check their data usage at any time during the month by calling 644-4482.
GTA will continue to add cell sites and capacity upgrades to ensure the best 3G and 4G wireless experience on Guam. Your business is important to us and we are proud to be your wireless service provider.
