GTA TeleGuam Kicks Off 2nd Annual Guam Phone Book Round-up

Guam school contest promotes Green initiative, offers $10,000 in cash prizes.

TAMUNING, Guam – (Feb. 3, 2010) – GTA TeleGuam Wednesday advanced its Green Movement initiatives by kicking off its second annual telephone directory round-up as a way of promoting recycling among Guam school children.

The contest provides $10,000 in cash prizes to schools that collect the most directories. It runs through March 30, 2010. The GTA TeleGuam Phone Book Round-up contest is open to any public, private or federal school on Guam.

Participating schools are eligible to win cash prizes up to $3,000, a tree planting ceremony on the school’s campus, trophies and special recognition.
"This contest is part of GTA TeleGuam overall green strategy to achieve positive outcomes for our environment and island," said Karen Gayle, GTA YellowBook project manager for GTA TeleGuam.
"We hope to inspire young people, adults and families to learn the importance of recycling as well as to take ownership and responsibility for preserving the island’s natural beauty and natural resources."

Guam i-recycle and the Pacific Daily News are co-sponsoring this year's contest. Last year, school children collected more than 35,000 outdated telephone directories. Children are encouraged to round-up old telephone directories from their homes, families, neighbors and friends and bring them to their schools.

The top 15 schools receive cash awards and prizes, based on the number of books they collect. GTA TeleGuam is sending each school in Guam an invitation and entry form for the contest. Schools can call 1-671-644-4482 for more information about the contest. Phone books are made into filler and mulching materials to be donated to local farmers in need.

The GTA YellowBook is made from recycled paper, of which 40 percent is post-consumer paper and environmentally friendly inks.
